Wisdom Teeth and Dental Health: When to Act and When to Wait

Wisdom teeth removal is common but not always necessary. At Emu Plains Family Dental, we’re often asked: Should I get my wisdom teeth out? And the honest answer is: it depends.

Not all wisdom teeth cause problems. Some grow in normally and don’t require removal at all. Others can lead to infections, pain, and long-term dental issues. So how do you know whether to act now – or wait and monitor?

Let’s walk through the key signs and factors to consider.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are your third molars, usually appearing between ages 17 and 25. Most people have four, but some have fewer or none at all. They’re located at the very back of your mouth, and they’re often the last teeth to erupt.

Because they come in late, they can cause problems like:

  • Impacted teeth (stuck under the gum)
  • Crowding other teeth
  • Decay or gum infection
  • Jaw pain or headaches

But again, not everyone will experience these issues.

When It’s Time to Act

We usually recommend removal if your wisdom teeth are:

  • Causing pain or swelling
  • Infected or inflamed
  • Growing sideways or pushing against other teeth
  • Causing bite or jaw alignment issues
  • Partially erupted (creating a bacteria trap under the gum)

In these cases, it’s safer to remove them earlier – before the roots grow longer and the surrounding bone hardens, making surgery more complicated.

When It’s Okay to Wait

If your wisdom teeth are:

  • Fully erupted and straight
  • Not causing pain or pressure
  • Easy to keep clean
  • Not affecting nearby teeth

…then we may recommend simply monitoring them over time. This usually involves:

  • Annual dental X-rays
  • Regular check-ups
  • Monitoring for signs of crowding, decay, or infection

How We Decide What’s Best

Every patient is different. During your wisdom teeth check-up at Emu Plains Family Dental, we’ll:

  • Take digital X-rays to check positioning
  • Assess your bite and jaw alignment
  • Look at your age, oral hygiene, and dental history
  • Recommend the most conservative and safest option

Prevention = Less Pain & Cost

Removing problematic wisdom teeth early (before they cause pain or damage) can prevent infections, protect your other teeth, and save you from future emergencies.
