How to Prepare for Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery

by | Jun 5, 2025 | Uncategorized

Whether you’re a teen, a uni student, or a busy adult, wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure that most people will face at some point. If yours are coming in at an awkward angle, causing pain, or risking infection, it’s often best to get them removed early – before bigger problems develop.

At Emu Plains Family Dental, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you prepare for wisdom teeth removal surgery and feel confident going into your appointment.

1. Know Why They Need to Come Out

Wisdom teeth (also called third molars) usually appear between ages 17 and 25. But because our jaws are smaller than in the past, there’s often not enough room for them to come in properly.

Common issues include:

  • Pain or pressure in the back of the mouth
  • Inflammation or swelling
  • Partially erupted teeth (trapped under the gum)
  • Infection or gum disease
  • Risk of damaging nearby teeth or causing crowding

If we’ve recommended removal, it’s because your wisdom teeth could cause future dental problems or are already affecting your oral health.

2. Ask Questions at Your Consultation

Before your procedure, we’ll explain:

  • The number of teeth being removed
  • Whether you’ll need sedation
  • What to expect during recovery
  • How long the procedure takes
  • Cost and health fund rebate options

Don’t be afraid to ask anything – understanding what’s ahead makes the process feel less stressful.

3. Follow Pre-Surgery Instructions

On the day of surgery:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for several hours beforehand if you’re having IV sedation
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home
  • Fill your pain relief or antibiotic prescription in advance

We’ll provide all the instructions you need prior to the appointment, including aftercare tips for a smooth recovery.

4. Plan for Recovery Time

Most people need 2–4 days of rest post-surgery. Plan ahead by:

  • Booking time off work or study
  • Stocking your fridge with soft foods (think soup, yoghurt, smoothies)
  • Having ice packs and pain relief ready
  • Avoiding sports or strenuous activity

It’s also a good idea to limit talking and stick to cool or lukewarm drinks for the first day or two.
