Why Wisdom Teeth Grow and When They Can Cause Problems

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why do we even have wisdom teeth?” – you’re not alone! These third molars are a bit of a mystery and often cause more trouble than they’re worth. But there’s a reason they exist and a time to act when they start causing problems.

At Emu Plains Family Dental, we help patients understand the purpose of wisdom teeth, why they can become impacted, and how to know if (or when) they should be removed.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are your third set of molars, located at the very back of the mouth. They typically emerge between ages 17 and 25, a time that was once considered the “age of wisdom”, hence the name.

Our ancestors needed these extra molars to chew a rougher diet made up of roots, nuts and raw meat. But today, with softer diets and better oral hygiene, wisdom teeth are more of a biological leftover than a necessity.

And because our jaws have evolved to be smaller, there’s often not enough room for wisdom teeth to grow in properly.

When Wisdom Teeth Become a Problem

In many cases, wisdom teeth grow in crooked, sideways, or get stuck under the gum (impacted). This can lead to a range of dental problems, including:

  • Pain or swelling
  • Jaw stiffness or headaches
  • Infections and abscesses
  • Gum inflammation
  • Cysts or damage to nearby teeth
  • Crooked or crowded teeth (especially after orthodontics)

The worst part? Some issues develop without noticeable symptoms – which is why regular check-ups and X-rays are so important.

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need Attention

Watch out for:

  • Soreness or throbbing at the back of your jaw
  • Swollen gums around partially erupted teeth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • Bad breath or unpleasant taste
  • Crowding of front teeth (especially if you’ve had braces)

Even if there’s no pain, impacted wisdom teeth can silently cause damage. That’s why we often recommend proactive removal to avoid complications down the track.

What We Check at Your Appointment

At Emu Plains Family Dental, we use digital X-rays and clinical exams to assess your wisdom teeth. We’ll look at:

  • Jaw size and tooth angle
  • Whether the teeth are impacted
  • The health of surrounding gums
  • Risk of infection or future crowding

If removal is the safest option, we’ll walk you through everything – gently, clearly, and with minimal downtime.
